What are you doing this summer?
Six girls, all sixth-grade students in Bowling Green, Ky., have launched Project Terra Incognita—a plan to send “an object into the stratosphere (around 20 miles above the earth’s surface) via a weather balloon and return it safely back to earth without damaging any of the equipment from the fall or extreme temperatures and wind speed.”
In addition to the science component, the summer project also involves taking “both HD video and high resolution still photographs of the curvature of the earth and black of space from near orbit.”
The girls turned to crowdsourcing to raise funds for needed equipment and supplies. Their video reveals more about their personalities than their project, but it’s clear that together they’re a force to be reckoned with. With five days left to their Kickstarter effort, they’ve already surpassed their $3,600 goal and are nearing $4,000. Backers who pledge $5 or more will receive copies of the best photos.
One of the other project objectives is to “inspire others to challenge the idea that some things are impossible.”
So, readers, what impossible ideas are you involved with or have read about that are worth sharing or backing? Post a comment about summer projects thought up by kids or teachers—anything involving tinkering, building or designing with digital media—and we’ll tweet the ideas.
