Covering the London Olympics as a Student Journalist

College students are reporting from London, tweeting, blogging and producing audio and video segments about the Olympics for school-sponsored media and professional news outlets. It’s an opportunity to work as a backpack journalist, traveling with the latest multimedia tools.

Scoring a ticket to cover the Olympics is one of the perks of being a sports or news journalist. This year, a number of colleges have sent student journalists to cover the games alongside seasoned reporters, writes A. Adam Glenn at MediaShift.

The students are tweeting, blogging and shooting photos and video for school-sponsored websites, and some are supplying stories for other news outlets. It’s an opportunity to work under fast-paced deadlines on a global stage, testing out new technologies and the latest multimedia tools, while dealing with the familiar stresses of gaining access to sources and unearthing unique story angles. The prevalence of social media during this Olympics makes for an even more exciting (or stressful) experience. 

Glenn provides detailed descriptions of programs underway in London involving Boston University’s College of Communication, Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, and the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State. Most students lack credentials, but they’ve been able to provide sidebars on local athletes as well as report breaking news and feature stories around London.

Hans Meyer, who teaches online and multimedia journalism at Scripps, told MediaShift the school’s Olympics initiative is “the perfect opportunity for students to take risks. They’ll be in an environment where there are a wealth of stories and reporters. I’m urging them to tell different stories than all their counterparts.” Check out the Scripps London website for a look at the mix of coverage students have produced so far.

“I’m pushing them as much as I can to think differently about their work,” said Meyer. “I really want them to try something they haven’t, such as video if they are primarily a writer, or social media tools, such as Storify.”

University of Oregon got a head start on the games when the school’s Daily Emerald newspaper, which underwent a digital overhaul earlier this year, put together a team of three dozen students to cover the Olympic trials held on the Eugene campus. Connected Educator Month Celebrates Peer Professional Development

Are you part of an online professional community of educators? The U.S. Department of Education has designated August Connected Educator Month to get more teachers and administrators to use online communities for professional development and support.

Connected Educator Month kicks off this week with a slew of activities designed to get educators online connecting with colleagues. The month-long celebration is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Connected Educators initiative that recognizes the power online communities and networks have for educators to collaborate, learn from each other, and access needed resources.  The goal of the events, according to Classroom 2.0’s Steve Hargadon, is to widen the audience of educators and administrators who recognize the benefits of peer professional development.

Connected Educator Month (CEM) will take place throughout the month of August and include online events and activities, including forums, webinars, guided tours, open houses, book clubs and more.  A complete schedule is available at the Connected Educator Month website and Hargadon has put together this great roundup of the first week’s events.

More than 60 educational organizations have signed on as partners including the National Writing Project (NWP), the American Association of School Librarians and the Consortium for School Networking.

You can catch keynotes this week from Douglas Rushkoff, Larry Johnson, Chris Lehmann, Deborah Meier, and Connie Yowell and participate in panel discussions on personalized learning or distributed leadership and teacher-led change. Many events are being held online via Blackboard Collaborate, but CEM is also coordinating events at dozens of other online locations.

The National Writing Project’s Teachers Teaching Teachers web radio program, for example,  led by the New York City Writing Project, will host a special show focusing on online communities of practice tomorrow, August 1 at 9 pm EDT.

And over at Connectedlearning.tv on August 14 at 1 pm EDT, NWP’s Director of National Programs and Site Development Elyse Eidman-Aadahl will host a discussion on connected learning for adults, diving into whether the concept of communities of practice can help frame connected learning in the workplace and beyond.

If you’re new to all this, organizers have prepared a series of Connected Educators Month Starter Kits designed for people who’ve never been part of an online professional community or who are already part of one but want to engage more deeply. A starter kit for adminsitrators is also available. More information is available here.

The month will conclude with the Learning 2.0 Conference, a virtual event held August 20 – 24 billed as a “global conversation on rethinking teaching and learning in the age of the Internet,” with conference strands on changes in the classroom, student learning, teacher personal and professional growth, schools, and pedagogy.

Design Thinking Workshop for Educators: Applying Creative Problem Solving to Classrooms

Edutopia today launched a free online workshop, “Design Thinking for Educators,” to help educators consider how design thinking—a problem-solving process built around five stages—might be applied in the classroom and in their professional lives.

Developed in collaboration with IDEO and Riverdale Country School, a pre-K-12 independent school in New York City, the workshop is scheduled for five weeks but can be completed at any pace. Included is a free, downloadable Design Thinking Toolkit—94 pages that take users through the key steps involved in defining a challenge and building a solution: discovery, interpretation, ideation, experimentation, and evolution. Workshop participants can also join collaborative design challenges and weekly online brainstorms.

The concept of design thinking has been around for decades, taking root first in architecture and urban planning spaces and later in the business and public sectors and now education. In the workshop introduction, Edutopia staff write that design thinking can address “complex challenges by encouraging practitioners to deeply consider the people they are designing for as the inspiration for developing new solutions.”

That point is reinforced by Karen Cator, director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. “Strong online communities and networks, at their most effective, foster collaborative problem solving and the co-creation of new knowledge, and design thinking provides a powerful guiding framework for enabling that,” Cator said in a release. “Problem solving in education needs to be informed by a clear picture of reality on the ground but also with an openness to distinctively different ways of approaching problems. Design thinking offers a process to better understand the environment and develop novel solutions in an iterative, cost effective, and inclusive way.”

“I draw on design process all of the time now in thinking about
 almost every system you can imagine, from how to archive student records to how to involve parents in our new student assessment strategies,” said Karen Fierst, a learning specialist at Riverdale Country School and part of the first grade literacy program redesign team. “Investing time and energy in learning a versatile approach to tackle old challenges and to bring new ideas to fruition will pay us back manifold, no matter the educational setting you’re in or the magnitude of your challenge.”

Craftsmanship is Dead. Long Live Maker Culture.

Journalist and author Louis Uchitelle laments the decline of American craftsmanship along with its cultural influence. Here’s why a visit with DIY makers in Detroit or a spin through Caine’s Arcade (with a fun pass, of course) might change his opinion about the future of manufacturing and the American self-image.

Last weekend, The New York Times published an Education Life supplement that included stories on how college-age students are building everything from social apps to lifesaving technologies—both with and without formal instruction and support.

On the same day, in the business section, Louis Uchitelle described what he sees as “the dilution of American craftsmanship”—an issue fraught with cultural as well as economic implications. Uchitelle not only points to the shrinking presence of U.S.-based factories and lack of manufacturing jobs, but to what he terms the Home Depot approach to craftsmanship—“simplify it, dumb it down, hire a contractor”—and to the fact that neither presidential candidate “promotes himself as tool-savvy presidential timber.”

Ask the administration or the Republicans or most academics why America needs more manufacturing, and they respond that manufacturing spawns innovation, brings down the trade deficit, strengthens the dollar, generates jobs, arms the military and kindles a recovery from recession. But rarely, if ever, do they publicly take the argument a step further, asserting that a growing manufacturing sector encourages craftsmanship and that craftsmanship is, if not a birthright, then a vital ingredient of the American self-image as a can-do, inventive, we-can-make-anything people.

That self-image is deteriorating.

It might be worthwhile to look at the changing ideas of craftsmanship through racial and gender lenses to ask how much this is a particularly white male fear. Women, of course, have always had to combat stereotypical gender expectations to gain access to craftsmanship trades or manufacturing jobs. And anyone who has ever seen a house go up in a major city would recognize the great diversity of immigrant groups involved in different stages of homebuilding. Ruth Milkman, a sociology professor at CUNY Graduate Center and at the Joseph F. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, where she also serves as academic director, confirms as much when she tells Uchitelle, “Pride in craft, it is alive in the immigrant world.”

The essay does not seem to include these skilled immigrants in the calculation of the decline of craftsmanship, however. The limited perspective is apparent in other ways, too. There’s not a single mention, for instance, of digital craftsmanship—like being able to write complex computer code or design multimedia landscapes. Even manufacturing summer camps are offering computer-aided design (CAD) training along with training on using power tools. This 21st-century craftsmanship is not on Uchitelle’s radar.

More surprising is his oversight of the rise of maker culture, which encourages kids (and adults) to engage in hands-on activities—celebrating traditional DIY skills such as woodworking as well as the STEM skills every government and business official says are required to ensure the competitiveness of the United States.

The movement encourages boys and girls to view themselves as creators of the world around them, in every possible sense. It emphasizes collaboration and shared skills and ideas. It makes it possible to envision designing not just objects but systems. This is one of my favorite quotes about makers, from Willow Brugh:

[O]nce you’ve noticed the belts on your local space’s MakerBot work an awful lot like the belts on your sewing machine, and maybe even your car, it’s difficult to not start to see how your other local systems work—your local school, your market—and see how to actively improve them.

Maker culture isn’t exactly a household term, not yet anyway, but Uchitelle wouldn’t have had to look far to see its influence on education and culture. This summer, Make magazine launched a virtual Maker Camp with DIY projects announced each morning on Google+. In Detroit—where makers are credited with setting a new course for the city’s future—25,000 people are expected to attend this weekend’s Maker Faire, where 460 people, 100 more than last year, will demo their crafts and creations.

Count Kathryn DiMaria among them. She bought a cheap, used Pontiac Fiero two years ago, when she was 12, with babysitting money she had saved. She’s now half-way through her goal of restoring the car to pristine condition by the time she can legally drive.

Of course, not all designers and developers appeal so neatly to the essay’s nostalgia, but there are shared beliefs in maker culture around the importance of tinkering, interest-driven learning, and community building that match Uchitelle’s appreciation for the cultural value of craftsmanship.

And remember Caine Monroy, the 9-year-old boy who built an arcade out of cardboard boxes, packaging tape and ingenuity? The foundation inspired by his efforts is hosting a Cardboard Challenge and Global Day of Play this fall to foster the creativity and imagination of kids around the world. Caine’s Arcade also has brought together educators to discuss project-based learning curriculums around STEM subjects, entrepreneurship, and social-impact.

Uchitelle makes important points about the demise of manufacturing as an industry and the dearth of options for high school students seeking training in a craft as an alternative to college. Yet I wish he had dug deeper, beyond the industry reports and economic forecasts. He might then have noticed a resurgence of interest in craftsmanship among young people and other groups. The makers of the future may not all look the same—neither will their crafts—but that’s a good thing, especially if we want meaningful craftsmanship to be as much about the future as an imagined past.

Call for Proposals: Digital Media and Learning Badge Development Research Competition

The Digital Media and Learning Competition on Badges for Lifelong Learning is seeking research proposals that support and inform the design, development and deployment of digital badges and badge systems.

The letter of intent application is due Aug. 27 and the final application is due Oct. 1. A workshop for awardees will be held in January 2013 at University of California, Irvine.

Digital Media and Learning Competition

In March 2012, the Digital Media and Learning Competition (supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in collaboration with HASTAC and Mozilla) awarded 30 development grants to support the creation of digital badges and badge systems that contribute to, identify, recognize, measure and account for learners’ new skills, competencies, knowledge and achievements. The badges aim to recognize learning both within and outside formal school settings. View the winning projects in two categories: Badges for Lifelong Learning Competition and Teacher Mastery and Feedback Competition.

“Digital badges have the potential to supercharge 21st-century learning,” David Theo Goldberg, director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute and co-founder of HASTAC, said when the winners were announced. “While we don’t yet know everything there is to know about how a digital badge ecosystem will work in the real world, we know that digital technologies are changing the way we learn, play, socialize and participate in civic life. The badge systems in this year’s Competition offer a promising platform to explore how we, as a society, can harness the power of digital media to advance learning in the U.S. and around the world.”

The research proposals can be submitted in any of the following categories:

1. The Digital Media and Learning Badges for Lifelong Learning general category, which supported the development of badges and badge systems across a diverse range of content, institutions, and approaches.

2. Project Mastery awards focusing on the efficacy of badging systems for learning at Gates Foundation supported Project Mastery sites (School District of Philadelphia, Adams County School District 50, Asia Society). Project Mastery projects promote learning that is mastery based and Common Core aligned. The aim is to support new learning and knowledge, real-world outcomes like jobs, credit for new skills and achievements, and whole new ways to level up in their life and work.

3. Teacher Mastery badge projects that track and promote feedback regarding the competencies, skills programs and subjects over which teachers acquire expertise. These include systems for recognizing and rewarding some of the capacities, skills and content needed to effectively teach math, literacy, or digital literacy skills and/or to effectively teach to the Common Core State Standards.
